Let's set it up so your study time actually moves your score.
First, know what you're actually studying for
The IBEW aptitude test (run by the electrical training ALLIANCE for the IBEW and NECA) has two sections:
- Algebra and Functions: 33 questions in 46 minutes
- Reading Comprehension: 36 questions in 51 minutes
It's scored on a 1–9 stanine scale, and most locals need at least a 4 to move you to an interview. Higher is better: it's a ranked list, so a stronger score moves you up it. There's no calculator, and the math is about Algebra 1 level: no trig, no calculus, no statistics.
That narrow scope works in your favor: it's a finite, knowable list of topics, not an ocean, and you can realistically cover it. Which is exactly why "study everything" is the wrong move here; it spreads your time thin across stuff you may already know.
The math topics that actually show up
Local prep materials point at a consistent list. If you're rusty, these are the things worth being fluent in, by hand:
- Whole numbers, integers, and order of operations
- Fractions and decimals (adding, subtracting, multiplying, common denominators)
- Rational and irrational numbers, and exponents
- Basic algebra: the distributive property, evaluating expressions, function notation
- Linear equations, including solving by substitution
- Ratios, proportions, and equivalent ratios
- Factoring, FOIL, and quadratics (including the quadratic formula)
- Number series (spotting the pattern)
- Reading graphs and plotting points
If several of those made you wince, that's fine; that's exactly what studying is for. But notice how specific the list is. You don't need "math." You need these.
The mistake that wastes the most time
Say you sit down to study and grind through a big pile of practice problems. You get the fractions questions right, miss a couple on quadratics, and move on. Most people walk away from that feeling like they "need to study math more."
But you don't need to study math more. You need to study quadratics. Those are different problems, and they take different amounts of time to fix. Reviewing fractions again (the thing you already got right) feels productive and does almost nothing for your score.

The efficient study loop
- Take a full-length practice test first, before studying. Not to feel bad about the score, but to find out where you actually stand.
- Look at the per-skill breakdown, not just the total. A 60% isn't "study everything." It's usually two or three specific weak skills dragging the number down.
- Study only those, in order. Fix the foundation before the fancy stuff: if fractions are shaky, quadratics won't stick.
- Practice at the real pace. About 84 seconds per question, by hand. Speed is a skill too.
- Re-test to confirm the gap closed, then move to the next one.
Done this way, studying is a finite amount of work with a visible finish line, instead of an endless slog against a test that feels vague.
